Description

The new Windows Server 2019 Standard is a further development of the popular Windows Server 2016 operating system. It is suitable for most infrastructures and also for workloads such as Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SharePoint. In addition to the security standards of Windows Server 2016, it provides effective protection against threats. Virtual machines (VMs) that protect sensitive applications have been further developed. Linux virtual machines are now also supported. Administrators can also easily encrypt network segments between servers. A new feature is Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) which provides proactive protection against zero-day attacks and exploits in Windows Server 2019 Standard. It also allows you to centrally manage the entire security cycle.

Highly functional server management tool
The 2019 version of Windows Server enables hybrid cloud scenarios. It is based on the Honolulu project presented in 2017. Existing Windows Server environments can be easily connected to new cloud services. The user can easily integrate Azure Backup, Disaster Recovery, Azure File Sync and other Microsoft services into existing infrastructure and applications. The “Project Honolulu” software was officially introduced together with the release of Windows Server 2019. This server management tool is a central interface for managing servers running Windows 2019, 2016 or 2012R2, with or without a graphical interface. Typical tasks like performance monitoring or server configuration become easier because Project Honolulu designed them differently. Management of Windows services in mixed server architectures has also been simplified.

Smaller containers and HCI infrastructure
Windows Server 2019 Standard provides developers with greater support than before in modernizing existing applications when using container technologies. The Server Core base container images of the operating system are used for this purpose. Images can be reduced to a third of their current size, also cutting download time by approximately the 72%. There is also support for the open source container system Kubernetes. Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) is already known from Windows Server 2016 and the Windows Server Software Defined program. Pre-configured HCI solutions are also useful in Windows Server 2019 and help meet compute and storage requirements and are easy to deploy and scale. They can also be managed by Project Honolulu, which greatly simplifies the day-to-day work with HCI implementations.

Windows Server 2019 expands performance and reliability
Can also be used as a Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH). Windows-based programs or the entire desktop can be shared between users when running on the host. Also interesting are the new functions for memory management. Storage Migration Services (SMS) allow you to upgrade old file servers to the 2019 version with the transfer of data, access rights and settings. Storage migration transfers the identity of the old server to a new one so that the old computer can be disconnected from the network. The tools you need are included at Honolulu Tools. Windows Server 2019 Standard also offers the Storage Replica feature. It was already included in the Datacenter Edition of Windows Server 2016 and is used for block replication of volumes between servers and clusters. Windows Server 2019 also offers a graphical interface, which some users missed in the 2016 version.

Until official information is available, you can refer to Windows Server 2016 requirements.
